 What's New for the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE?

After seven years of producing the GLK-Class as its compact crossover SUV, Mercedes-Benz replaced it with a sleeker, more refined model that it named the GLE for the 2016 model year. Being that it is a relatively new vehicle, the GLE doesn’t have an awful lot of changes going into 2018: its third model year. The AMG® 43 version of the crossover—which is primed as a high-performance variant—gets more horsepower, but that’s about it. The AMG® 43 trim joins its higher-performance AMG® 63 and 63 S siblings, as well as two other available gas-powered models: the GLE 350 and the GLE 350 4MATIC®. This suffix stands for all-wheel drive instead of the standard rear-wheel drivetrain.

At the base level, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE is powered by the M276, which is a 3.0-liter bi-turbo V6 that pumps out 302 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The AMG®-enhanced 3.0-liter bi-turbo V6 engine, which goes on the AMG® 43, produces 384 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque. And the AMG® 63 trim level relies on the AMG® 5.5-liter bi-turbo V8, which produces 550 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque on the regular model and 577 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque on the S. Notably, the AMG® 43 and 63 S models are available in a two-door coupe-like body style, in addition to the regular four-door SUV layout. The 350 engine is tied to a 7-speed automatic transmission while the AMG® model's engine are glued to a 9-speed automatic gearbox. For peak acceleration ability, go with the AMG® 63 S coupe, which registered a 0-to-60 mph time of 4.1 seconds. However, to maximize fuel economy, go with the GLE 350 for 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Designed as a two-row vehicle to seat up to five people, the 2018 GLE offers a cargo volume of up to 80.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Leatherette upholstery, front-seat heating, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, five years of mbrace® Connect for various remote access functions, dual-zone automatic control, Bluetooth®*** wireless technology, a smart key system with push-button start, a power tilt/slide sunroof, a garage-door opener, a USB port, HD Radio™, and the COMAND® infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen are just some of the many standard comfort and convenience features on the GLE. For safety, the SUV has LED daytime running lights, a rearview camera, electronic vehicle stability, and traction control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, forward collision warning, adaptive braking, brake assist, trailer stability and crosswind assist technologies, and nine airbags. Also worth mentioning is Mercedes-Benz PRESAFE®, which tightens the seat belts, closes the windows, and locks the doors when the vehicle senses that a crash is imminent.
